Scientology VM's are needed now to help with the relief efforts after the tsunami which hit the Solomon Islands on Monday.

From the Hindustan Times:

The death toll on the Solomon Islands as the result of Monday's tsunami has reached 22 and a state of emergency has been declared, Australian radio reported on Tuesday.

Two earthquakes measuring between 7.6 and 9 on the Richter scale unleashed a tsunami some 10 meters high that completely inundated the towns of Gizo and Noro. Scores of villagers have been reported missing.

The prime minister of the South Pacific island nation, Manasseh Sogavare, addressed the affected population on local radio, saying, "In this trying hour, my heart goes out to you."

Pfnet, a local information news wire reported earlier that the tsunami wave, which reached some 200 meters inland in some areas, was the highest ever to hit the Solomon Islands.

The island group is a popular venue with international tourists, and local residents rely mainly on fishing and tourism.

The most powerful and disastrous calamity involving a tsunami over the last 40 years occurred in December 2004, when an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale in the Indian Ocean generated a tsunami that hit South Asian countries, particularly Indonesia, killing more than 280,000 people. Tens of thousands were reported missing.

A while back, I posted on the idea of Scientology in the middle east. Right now, if you want to partake in Scientology services, and you're in the Arab peninsula, you've either got to go all of the way up to Tel Aviv where the Church of Scientology of Tel Aviv is, or go over to the Dianetics Centre in Karachi, Pakistan -- or even further to Delhi in India. It's a bit difficult.

This gorgeous photo of Abu Dhabi just reminded me again how I'd love to go to Arabia to start up a Scientology centre there.

Saw this as a neat story in Scientology Today - shows how Scientology Volunteer Ministers definitely help out wherever they are.

When a major fire broke out next door to the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Cavalcade in Rome, visitors saw first-hand what the Volunteer Ministers program is all about and why they are counted upon in times of emergency all over the world.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers Cavalcade opened in Rome this weekend, and the tent was filled with people wanting to know more about the program. From members of parliament and federal ministers to media, business leaders, neighbors and passers-by, people were eager see the exhibit and get their questions answered.

But when fire trucks, ambulances and police cars started screaming into the area to respond to a fire, the volunteer ministers responded immediately.

I just found a nice cache of Saint Hill photos on Flickr taken by a UK Scientologist -- photos of Saint Hill Manor, one of the first - and definitely the most important - Scientology churches.

Saint Hill was L. Ron Hubbard's home in the late 1950's and through the 60's, where a grand majority of Hubbard Administrative Technology as well as Scientology auditing was developed. Originally L. Ron Hubbard's home, it became the center of Scientology around the world, and an example of how Scientology can really affect a community and how one church can permeate across a major geographic region to positive change and results.

Scientologists Included in White House Internship Program

A recent group of W&M in Washington participants. Courtesy of University Relation After one and a half successful semesters in Washington D.C., the College is eager to continue to expand the internship program, W&M in Washington.

While students in the fall 2006 semester have little but praise for the program and faculty are lining up to be the professor of choice, many students still seem unaware of the advantages of living, working and studying in Washington D.C.

During the week, students work 35 hours a week at an organization whose specialty is in sync with the theme for the semester. Class schedules are different each semester, but currently students attend classes two nights a week and Friday afternoons. Then the weekend is free.

To many students, the opportunity to go and explore Washington D.C. is priceless.

"Challenging but illuminating," said senior Michelle Treseler about the workload of the program. "Adrenaline will carry us for a bit, and then we'll see."

The philosophy behind this program is to offer “practical learning in ‘real life’ settings,” and the program more than fulfills its promise. While gaining immeasurable work experience and reputable references for the future, students also earn 12 credits towards their degree. There are two four-credit classes, plus four credits earned from work relating to an internship.

Program participants live in historic townhouses on Capitol Hill. Through the Washington Intern Student Housing (WISH) program, students lease townhouses for $850 per month and are within three blocks of the Supreme Court.

WISH is one of the reasons that W&M in Washington is so advantageous. While the College overall offers a variety of internships and study abroad programs, the D.C. program is billed at the regular tuition rate, plus a $500 program fee and the housing cost.

While there are other Washington programs available, they can cost up to $18,000. This program opens up the opportunity to study in one of the most culturally diverse and politically active areas in the world without breaking the bank.

This semester, the theme is production of national culture in Washington D.C. Professor Anne Rasmussen of the Music Department is leading her students on an investigation of the role that “expressive culture plays in our nation’s political theatre on the national, federal and local levels.”

Interested students can look forward to a range of themes in the future from business to religion. The theme for fall 2007 will be “Religion and the Federal State” with Professor Marc Lee Raphael and the spring semester will be all about national security in the U.S. with Professor Amy Oakes.
Even the internships themselves are held at an array of institutions. Internships already secured for fall span from the Church of Scientology to the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

“We started with the idea of creating something that was a substantial notch more intellectual and educationally more ambitious and justified,” said Adam Anthony, Director of the College’s Washington Office, summing up the idea behind the program.

This semester there are 18 students in Washington D.C. and the College hopes to send 20 students this upcoming fall semester. While the deadline for fall applications has just passed, spring applications can be found at the program website: www.wm.edu/wmindc

South African Cars get Flame Throwers Installed On Them

Okay - here's a rediculous one from CNN that probably should have been on my Scientology buddy's Well Equipped Blog:

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Crime-obsessed South Africans have a powerful new weapon with which to stop likely criminals: the car flamethrower.

Casting a man-high fireball, reportedly with no damage to the paint, the Blaster has been placed on 25 South African vehicles since its introduction last month.

At 3,900 rand ($655), it offers a cheap, dramatic defense against carjackers. It has yet to be deemed illegal.

South African courts allow killing if convinced that it's in self-defense. The defense is not unheard of. In last year's 13,000 carjackings, criminals often brandished weapons or used them with little provocation.

The Blaster squirts liquefied gas from a bottle in the automobile's trunk through two nozzles, located under the front doors. The gas is then ignited by an electric spark, with fiery consequences.

Both sides flame at the same time, regardless of whether the attack is coming from just one side of the vehicle, or whether passersby are on the other side. But the breadth and depth of blast can be modified according to individual preference.

Fire blinds, not kills, maker assures

Blaster inventor Charl Fourie, 33, disputed concerns that the flamethrower could burn someone to death.

"My personal feeling is that it would definitely blind a person. He will never see again," he said

Firefighters, medical personnel and the police agree 100 percent "that it will never kill a person," Fourie asserted. "This is definitely non-lethal.... A person is not going to stand there for a minute while you roast him. It will fend off the attacker, and that's the end of it."

Fourie has filed an international patent application. He anticipates thousands of orders nationally and from abroad. "The demand is huge," he said.

First customer a Johannesburg police official

The first buyer, Police Superintendent David Walkley of Johannesburg's crime intelligence unit, is satisfied the Blaster is legal, provided it is used correctly.

"It depends entirely on the circumstances and whether you can justify self-defense," he said.

"Yes, there are certain risks in using it, but there are also risks in not having anything at all."

Scientology handles Multi-Language Magazine Publishing with new Flash Interface

If you're the Church of Scientology, you've got a problem that many other more localised organizations don't have: languages.

The various entities within the Church of Scientology have recently solved this with a flash-based magazine publishing system, that takes magazines and such and puts them in a nifty flash-based interface, with page-flipping animation, etc. It's got built-in zooming features, web links, and has locale stuff built into it as well, so you can switch languages.

As an example, here is a catalog of Scientology publisher Bridge Publications flash-based holiday catalog:

Prior to this whole setup, they had to use some other software-based page-flipping component, but this cut out Mac users, and linux users (LIKE ME!! Argh!). So, this change of theirs to a Flash-based component is a welcome change -- especially now that Flash 9 is out for Linux!

The icing on the cake for me is Impact Magazine, which is the publication of the International Association of Scientologists. Unfortunately, this is a member's only issue, so I'm only going to show the cover:

The magazine is pretty kickass though, and is worth being an IAS member, just to get the magazine.

Anyhow - just one more nifty item I figured I would show off that makes me proud to be a Scientologist. Have a look!

How do you use Web 2.0 Tools to Drive Traffic to your Site?

Every day, it seems, I'm coming upon new Web 2.0 tools that can be used to drive visitors to your site or blog. At first, I tried to do justice to this with a blog post here and there, attempting to catalog some of these. My list has since grown out of control, though, so I'm writing this blog post as much to inform, as to organize my own thoughts on this. I am a Scientologist, I have a message I want to get out on my blog, and as such would want people to see it and find out about Scientology. It's the same problem that someone trying to sell bicycles has, or someone trying to peddle on-line pet care products or washing machine catapults.

Here's what I've found has been successful, in varying degrees, to get people to come to my Blog. I'm extremely curious, though, what other people have found successful -- as I've never really 'hit the jackpot' on this.

Social News Sites:

These are sites like digg.com, reddit.com, etc which allow people to vote on 'news' that they think is best. These drive great sums of traffic -- when your message is right. Unfortunately, a great deal of the stories that people think are interesting are very 'corn and games' type news -- where the newest photo of an exploding laptop or a photoshopped picture of Steve Ballmer in a bikini or whatever ends up as the most popular thing on there. Fine, it's the masses, and that's the planet we're on. But it still drives traffic. Best ones I've found are:

digg.com (and if you're german, yigg.de)
reddit.com
netscape.com
newsvine.com
fark.com
slashdot.com
shoutwire.com

All of them have had varying degrees of effectiveness. I've had a handful of Netscape stories on Scientology make the first page, and those got some serious traffic, but since one of their latest redesigns, Netscape is no longer optimized to actually drive traffic to the news source. Digg.com and Reddit.com have been the best, though - routinely sending quite a few visitors for good posts.

Social Bookmarking Sites:
I've had slightly less success with Social Bookmarking sites, but still - they're fun, they're easy, and they do move along some manner of traffic. Best ones I've found are:

1) - Kaboodle: I found Kaboodle to have, by far, the best bunch of features of any Social Bookmarking service -- and they've been steadily adding feature after feature over the past 6 months. One can easily make pages of grouped links which are extremely easy to share. For example, a page I made on the speeches done by David Miscavige (which I wanted to have all in one place) now show up with a regular, easy-to-type “.html” page URL that I can just type in myself or share with others. Likewise, when Iw as doing a bunch of research on SEO, I used Kaboodle instead of my regular Firefox bookmarks — just using the “Add to Kaboodle” button that goes in my bookmarks toolbar. I actually found it was easier to do this than to work out an organization that made sense in Firefox. Further, I was then able to share this grouping of pages with others (http://www.kaboodle.com/jetteroheller/seo-pages.html for your edification). Descriptions of links and pages and items are also easy to add, and you can then share your Kaboodle links with others. So, though the site is only in beta, I would heartily recommend it as it has a ton of features.

2) - Furl: I found Furl to also be a very easy one to use, and is faster to bookmark sites than Kaboodle. It doesn’t have the same visual flair, but allows for nifty groupings of items, and also allows you to see how many people have viewed the items you have bookmarked.

3) - Del.icio.us: The old heavy-hitter. Del.icio.us definitely doesn’t have the visual flair of other ones like Kaboodle or even Simpy, but is used everywhere. The other nice thing is that bookmarks you add to Del.icio.us can be imported into many other different bookmarking services directly.

4) - BlueDot: This one probably has the slickest way to add bookmarks, which makes it extremely useful. You can click “Dot this” in your toolbar, and a little baby window will pop up and allow you to still select text in the page you’re bookmarking while keeping the add-to window open. This makes it easier to grab little relevant pieces of content and stick them in your BlueDot list — which then makes your list more valuable to others. Bluedot also added a "Digg"-like feature which you can get to by hitting http://bluedot.us/front -- it's sort of a "Best of Bluedot" page with voted-in bookmarks.

5) - ClipClip: This is an incredible service (and recently fully-redesigned) that allows you to highlight whole pieces of websites that you want to share with others - which you can then group into “activities”. For example, let’s say you wanted to “get help” or “find out about scientology“, you can create whole sections of web pages that forward that activity or answer that question. Very useful for the researcher.

Flickr / Photobucket:

After reading a neat e-mail newsletter I got on marketing using Flickr and Photobucket, I started checking this out. Both Flickr and Photobucket have photos currently numbering in the billions, with millions being added every day. Every photo you add can be tagged and can have HTML associated with it -- so kicking up discussions on Flickr & Photobucket can potentially create quite a bit of traffic for you.

Message Boards:

Probably one of the most classic ways to drive traffic to a site is with active message board posts. If you have a number of people who are active on message boards, you can drive a REDICULOUS amount of traffic to a site. Whether or not they stick or do what you want is another question, but the traffic is undeniable.

Back in November, I posted an article on my blog about Psychiatry, Big Pharma and Scientology -- and how drug companies have been lining CBS's pockets to the tune of over $600 Million, in exchange for some serious amounts of editorial control. That post hit a couple of message boards, and next thing you know, I got more traffic the next 2 days than I had gotten in the previous lifetime of the blog.

So, in that case, the trick is going to Google Groups and other popular message boards, and finding message boards that match the content of your blog. Then, drop a few good posts there, and you'll have some traffic. In the case of the above traffic -- I never dropped any posts at all -- it was some random other fellow who saw the post and started talking it up.

In any case - that's my take on traffic right now. Comments?

Church of Scientology Boston having Dianetics Seminar

I just found (via a Google ad ) a Dianetics Seminar that the Church of Scientology of Boston is having this coming April.

Now, being a New Englander myself and having lived in Boston for 4 years, I know that they've had Dianetics seminars before -- and excellent ones at that. However, that in itself is not what's newsworthy. The fact that they posted it on a blog, and take the registrations for the cycle on-line -- now that's what's interesting to me, and something I'm starting to see more amongst churches of Scientology.

Churches aren't generally noted for being all 'web 2.0' and so forth, but I think it's neat that a Scientology church would start using a communications medium like a blog to get people informed.

Scientology in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Hubbard Academy of Personal Independence - the official Scientology Organisation in Scotland, is looking at moving into larger quarters shortly, in step with the many other UK Churches of Scientology that are also experiencing similar growth. Latest example of this is the stunning new Scientology premises in London.

As for Scientology in Edinburgh, I figured I'd give a brief overview of what's in Edinburgh -- as a backdrop to why a new Church of Scientology should be located in this prominent and historical city of Freedom.

Edinburgh (pronounced ED-in-burra) is a major and historic city on the east coast of Scotland on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, and in the unitary local authority of City of Edinburgh. It has been the capital of Scotland since 1492 and is the site of the Scottish Parliament, which was re-established in 1999. The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. In the census of 2001 Edinburgh had a total resident population of 448,624.

Anyone who knows this 1982 classic (Airplane II) probably remembers that scene. Anyhow, being a networking guy I commonly find myself in the position where people think I have the answer for just about everything. It's random question central at my desk, and really has been every job I've been at for the last 10 years.

I only mention it, as somone just came up to me with the urgent question of, "What does the POD stand for in "iPod"?

In any case, I've always maintained that L. Ron Hubbard's study technology is what's behind being able to know things or not know things. Specifically, clearing up Misunderstood Words when you come to them instead of explaining them away, getting them half-comprehended, or totally glossing over them altogether.

There's a whole course you can take on just how to study, in any Scientology church. If you're one of those people asking, more than the one answering the "cheetah" type questions, I'd try checking it out.

Silicon Valley chapter of Anti-Drug Campaign

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is the Foundation which started as the Scientology Anti-Drug campaign, but due to its extreme popularity, has now come into its own to distribute its drug-free message everywhere. Completely non-religious in nature, the program has what is literally the most effective anti-drug pamphlets anywhere.

I recently saw that a Silicon Valley Anti-Drug coalition popped up, also forwarding the message -- and that they recently had a spot on KKUP in Silicon Valley. Have a look - but also have a look at the anti-drug booklets as well, as they're excellent. There's one on each major drug of choice:

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Celebrating Carnival in Brazil

It's February and people from all over the world will soon be traveling to Brazil for Carnival, the unique 4-day celebration leading up to Ash Wednesday, and starting this year on Saturday, February 17th.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour of Brazil is dedicated to bringing joy to every day of the year by putting effective tools for living in the hands of everyone who wants a better life.

Brazil is a land of extremes. Although it has the fourth largest city and the largest metropolitan area in the world, some of its citizens still live in the most primitive of villages. It has the ninth largest economy in the world but the discrepancy between the rich and the poor and the distribution of its wealth is one of the worst on Earth. Brazil has the largest Japanese population of any nation outside of Japan; twice as many Italians live in the City of São Paulo as in Rome; a third as many Spanish as in Madrid and a third as many Portuguese as in all of Portugal. Video - Chewbacca Gets Arrested on Hollywood Walk of Fame

ABC News reports on shocking footage from the Jimmy Kimmel Show in which Chewbacca is arrested by the LAPD in front of tourists on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The LAPD reports that Chewbacca was arrested outside Mann's Chinese Theater after headbutting a tour guide who told him he should not be asking tourists for money.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers help in Florida Twister Aftermath

Volunteers carry the cross from the rubble of the Lady Lake Church of God in Lady Lake on Saturday.

LADY LAKE - Norma Acabeo looked ashamed as she asked rescue volunteers for a few more blankets and a toothbrush. She looked disoriented and was still in disbelief.

"We've worked so hard for everything. We've never had to ask for anything," Acabeo told a Church of Scientology volunteer minister, her shoulders shivering. Across the street, her son's mobile home in the Spencers Loop neighborhood, lay in shambles.

"He works like a dog for everything he has and look at what he has now," said Acabeo, pointing toward her son Bob Keown's home.

Deadly twisters early Friday morning tore through area neighborhoods and claimed 20 lives. Acabeo and her son were lucky. Instead of worrying about funeral arrangements, they were left picking up the pieces. Just down the street, their 17-year-old neighbor Brittany May wasn't so fortunate - a tree crushed her as she lay in bed.

Emotions ranged from one extreme to another in mobile home parks in Lady Lake and upper-middle-class retirement neighborhoods in The Villages. Storm survivors were upset, but at the same time optimistic.

"Despite our house being destroyed .Ê.Ê. if you look around there are at least eight people, volunteers, friends and neighbors who have come in and helped us with our furniture," said Al Seiden, who lives in The Village of Poinciana. "This has been fantastic. The spirit of community here is unbelievable."

In the background, neighbors - whom Seiden hadn't even met before the storm tore the roof off his house - picked up debris. White insulation inside the home looked like fluffy snow.

Outside, dozens of Community Emergency Response Team volunteers walked the streets, chatting with residents and offering water and hot dogs. Without the torn-up homes, the scene would appear like a casual block party.

A dozen Church of Scientology Disaster Response Team volunteers comforted residents.

"We've been to a lot of disasters," said Judy Fagerman, volunteer minister coordinator of the response team [from the Church of Scientology of Tampa]. "We come out, find out what the needs are and help the residents the best we can. And sometimes all they need is a shoulder to cry and lean on."

What do you do when you know drugs are a one-way street down, and your friends are taking them? That was the dilemma facing Rama, a teenager from Sydney. "All drugs lead to one place. Nowhere," said Rama, who had already been through it — ecstasy, cocaine, marijuana — all before he was 18 years old.

Rama counts himself as one of the lucky ones. Because he got help when he needed it.

Things were going downhill at breakneck speed when a friend of his, a Scientologist, saw Rama was in trouble. His friend told Rama about a program sponsored by the Church of Scientology of Sydney, called the Drug Free Ambassadors and handed him a set of booklets about drugs. The Drug Free Ambassadors and their American counterpart, the Drug Free Marshals, created by the Church of Scientology International 13 years ago, have chapters throughout Australia and New Zealand and around the world.

The booklets Rama read are very special. They were created by the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, and they are written for young people giving them the truth about the most commonly abused street and prescription drugs. What makes these booklets unique and effective is that they are easy to understand and they're factual. With peer pressure pushing kids to take drugs, these booklets arm kids against the false propaganda, giving them information they need to make educated and responsible choices about drugs.

Once he decided to quit taking drugs, Rama wanted to get through to his friends who were still using them. And he wanted to reach out to kids throughout Sydney to help them avoid getting into drugs in the first place.

Cyrus Brooks, the spokesman for the Drug-Free Ambassadors of Sydney, was full of praise for the teenager. "Rama is very gung-ho. And he knows what he's talking about," said Brooks. "He wants to make sure other kids don't fall into the same trap he was in."

Sandisk rolls out flash hard drives for laptops

Sandisk wants to replace the hard drive in notebooks with flash memory, a swap that it says will make thin laptops faster and more reliable.

Seems to me that reliability would still be a problem. After a few thousand writes, Flash memory is supposed to degrade and eventually result in dead bits in the Flash. It seems to me that if you used this as your main storage, it would eventually start having pieces of the unit fail, just from being pounded. A swap file, for example, seems like it would be the first point of failure on such a device.

Rite Aid Corp. — the third-biggest drugstore chain, which recently agreed to buy the Eckerd and Brooks chains as well — has seen its profits rise of late after its introduction of generic versions of drugs such as Zoloft. Why? Because it's a multibillion-dollar money-making scam, and they want in on the action! Personally, I think it's pretty underhanded. It's selling in to people's non-understanding or non-confront of situations they have in life that are making them depressed. It's like preying on the unhappiness of someone who just had a loved one die -- their problem is not a sudden chemical imbalance that miraculously happened in their brain. Their problem is that a loved one just died!

Scientology Volunteer Minister Jack Farmer

Jack Farmer discovered Scientology in 1974 in Bedford, Indiana where he picked up a copy of Dianetics The Modern Science of Mental Health and began applying it. He began auditing as outlined in the book (hence the name book auditor) and soon had a thriving field practice.

He audited a person who subsequently had his glasses changed 3 times in 3 weeks for the better after 15 hours of Dianetics Auditing. Another person after 2 hours of Dianetics auditing had a lifetime problem with a limp from Polio improve dramatically and was walking 50% better because of Dianetics.

Jack grew from a skeptic to a Dianetics practitioner and he knows the power of Scientology and Dianetics technology to change life for the better.

In July of 1974 he heard about Scientology and took his Field Group to Detroit, Michigan for professional training, then moved to Los Angeles to be nearer the Church in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles he again built up a Field Practice as a Volunteer Minister where he did book auditing, ethics handling and assists.

In 1985 he started a Computer Bulletin Board Service (BBS) called the Crusader BBS where he disseminated Scientology. He and his BBS became known worldwide for their Anti-Piracy Stance. This BBS is now Crusader Services, a web based software and survey company. And by the way, he met his future wife on the BBS, brought her into Scientology and the two now run Crusader Services.The name Crusader comes from the Portland Oregon Crusade For Religious Freedom. Jack's BBS and now the company are named in honor of that Crusade and those who participated in that Crusade.

Jack has been a field auditor for 30 years with over 10,000 hours of auditing experience with book auditing and assists. Jack and his wife are also Founding Patrons of the IAS (International Association of Scientologists) and members of IHELP (International Hubbard Ecclesiastic League Of Pastors).

The one thing Jack loves most is using Scientology auditing to help others, as he knows Scientology saved his life and sanity and he knows what it can do for you.

The Scientology Surfer!

I couldn't think of a better title for this blog.

First off, I'm not a surfer. I'm from where there are mountains and woods. Where one goes mountain biking and camping and backpacking. I don't surf.

However, now that I'm Flocking with my Flocking Web Browser (it's fun to yell that out loud, on occasion) I needed a place to store all of my "BLOG THIS!!" items, thus my Scientology Surfer blog. We'll see how this goes!
